Rare Wood Series: Macassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica)
Ebony has long been associated with fine craftsmanship, musical instruments, heirloom furniture, and objects meant to last for generations. Among the many Ebony species found around the world, Macassar Ebony (Diospyros celebica) is one of the most visually striking. Its bold contrast of deep black heartwood streaked with warm tones of orange, brown, and gold gives it an unmistakable presence — dramatic, elegant, and naturally luxurious.
Unlike the common perception that Ebony is always jet–black, Macassar Ebony tells a richer story. Each board reveals its own pattern of color and movement through the grain. The Ebony currently in my studio shows beautiful orange–brown streaking flowing through a deep, charcoal–black base — the kind of character that makes every finished piece truly one-of-a-kind.
This is also one of the densest woods in the world — heavy enough to sink in water. That density allows the surface to polish to a glass-smooth finish, but it also means the wood demands slow, careful, intentional work. Sharp tools. Patience. Respect.
And that respect is important, because Ebony is a rare and carefully managed natural resource. Today, much of the world’s Ebony supply is harvested under strict controls to help protect remaining forests. That means Ebony should never be used casually. Instead, it is best suited for moments of emphasis — where a small amount of this extraordinary wood can elevate a design without excess.
Why Ebony Is Rarely Used in Cutting Boards
While I specialize in handcrafted cutting boards, you will rarely — if ever — see Ebony used as a primary cutting surface. There are good reasons for that:
Ebony is extremely dense and expensive
It can be brittle under heavy impact
It is better suited for fine details than large slabs
And most importantly — it is too rare to use in high-wear items
Instead, you may find Ebony used the way I prefer to use it:
✨ As an intentional accent
✨ An inlay feature
✨ A contrast element alongside Paduck, Walnut, Cherry, Maple or White Wenge
In this way, the beauty of Ebony becomes a highlight — not a commodity.
Why I Love Working With Macassar Ebony
There is something grounding about this wood. It invites stillness. It encourages restraint. It reminds the maker — and the person who holds the finished piece — that not all materials are meant to be ordinary or expected. Some woods are meant to whisper. Ebony quietly commands attention.
