Rare Wood Series
The Rare Woods Series: Where Rarity Meets Craft
There is a moment in every woodworker’s journey when the material itself becomes more than just wood—it becomes a story, a legacy, a piece of history shaped by time and nature. Welcome to The Rare Woods Series, a new chapter at 86 Custom Woodworking where craftsmanship meets some of the most extraordinary hardwoods on Earth.
Rare woods are not simply hard to find. They grow slowly, often in limited regions of the world, developed under conditions that make their grain tighter, their color richer, and their character unmistakable. These woods are heavier in the hand, denser on the blade, and more demanding at the bench—but the reward is unmatched beauty, strength, and presence.
This series begins with two legendary tropical hardwoods: Ebony and Cocobolo—both prized for their extreme density, striking natural color, and remarkable durability. Cocobolo, a rare Central American hardwood, carries an exceptionally high natural oil content that gives it a glass-smooth finish straight from the tool. Ebony, long associated with fine instruments and luxury craftsmanship, offers dramatic depth with jet-black to deep chocolate tones.
Working with rare woods is not easy. These species demand slow milling, sharp tools, patience, and respect. They challenge even experienced makers—but that challenge is exactly what makes them special. Each piece created from rare wood carries not only visual impact, but the quiet confidence of uncompromising material and method.
Throughout The Rare Woods Series, I will take you inside:
What makes each species rare
Where it comes from
Why it behaves the way it does
How it’s shaped, finished, and preserved
And why I choose to feature it in select heirloom pieces
These are not everyday boards. These are statement materials for clients who appreciate individuality, natural luxury, and objects made to last for generations.
If you’ve ever wondered what separates an ordinary cutting board from a true collector-grade piece, this is where that story begins.
Welcome to the Rare Woods Series.
